From the Golden Gate Bridge to Alcatraz to the cable cars on its streets, San Francisco, California, boasts some of America's top tourist attractions. The city also has exciting recreational activities such as boating and hiking through its urban parks. San Francisco hosts a number of events in April that will appeal to those interested in health and fitness.
Boating
For more than 90 years, the Pacific Inter-Club Yacht Association has presented Opening Day on the Bay. More than 100 boats of various types parade through San Francisco Bay during the late April event, which denotes the start of boating season in the city.
Join local residents as they observe the parade from a nearby pier. In the days after the event, you can head out on the water to do some boating of your own.
Green Activities
April is a good month to be green in San Francisco. Residents celebrate Earth Day on April 22 with a variety of events, including fairs, live performances and activities for kids.
San Francisco also hosts the Green Festival, an April event featuring a marketplace of environmentally friendly products as well as exhibits and speakers on topics such as organic dining and how to reduce your carbon footprint.
Baseball by the Bay
Sports fans love April because it represents the beginning of the Major League Baseball season. The Giants moved to San Francisco from New York in 1958 and have provided sports fans with All-Star players such as Juan Marichal, Willie McCovey and Barry Bonds, who hit a record 73 home runs with the Giants in 2001. The Giants' AT&T Park, which opened in 2000, is considered one of the best places to watch a baseball game. If you prefer American League baseball, head across the bay to catch the Oakland Athletics.
New Age Activities
Since 2002, San Francisco has been the host of the New Living Expo, a three-day April event designed to help individuals lead healthy, spiritual, environmentally sustainable lives.
More than 12,000 people attended the 2010 event, which featured wellness-related workshops, exhibits and discussion panels. If the New Living Expo isn't for you, consider joining a yoga or pilates class, as San Francisco has a number of studios offering both activities.
Walking
Walking is a great way to take in the many sights of San Francisco, from historic walking tours of downtown and Union Square to trails through Golden Gate Park to Strawberry Hill and the Conservatory of Flowers.
For a different walking experience, take a stroll through the Northern California Cherry Blossom Festival, an annual April event honoring Japanese culture. The festival schedule includes a parade, cultural performances and food booths.
