As people age, they often notice a decrease in brain functions such as memory and assimilation. This is partially because of the natural aging process, but other factors such as nutrition, environmental toxins and drug use may contribute to decreased brain activity. While some loss of brain function may be inevitable, there are supplements that may help rejuvenate brain cells and support mental acuity. These supplements are not meant to replace traditional medical treatments, and there is no scientific evidence of the effectiveness of these supplements. Consult your physician before taking supplements to support enhanced brain activity.

Glutamine

Glutamine is an amino acid that is thought to effectively pass through the bloodstream into the brain tissue. According to James F. Balch, author of "Prescription for Nutritional Healing," glutamine is frequently referred to as "brain food." The brain converts this amino acid into glutamic acid, a necessary element for brain rejuvenation and cerebral function. This amino acid is commercially available as L-glutamine, which is thought to reduce mental fatigue and enhance cognitive performance. Talk to your doctor before taking a glutamine supplement.

Vitamin B12

Vitamin B12 is most commonly used to prevent anemia by enhancing the body's ability to utilize iron, and to aid in the digestion of foods and the metabolization of proteins and fats. However, it may also be used to enhance brain function by improving brain cell activity, notes Dr. Balch. A vitamin B12 deficiency may contribute to memory loss, mental fatigue and brain cell damage. Although B12 vitamin deficiencies are rare--the body can typically store about five years' worth of this vitamin--it does occur in vegans and those with poor eating habits. Although B12 is generally considered safe, you should check with your physician before taking a vitamin B12 supplement.

Acetyl-L-Carnitine

Acetyl-L-carnitine is an ester of carnitine that is thought to promote the transfer of essential fatty acids to mitochondria, which are organelles responsible for producing energy. According to Dr. Mauro Di Pasquale, a nutrition expert and contributor to the Body Building website, acetyl-L-carnitine is a cognitive enhancer, and slows the degeneration of brain cells due to age and environmental toxins. It is thought to stimulate the brain's neurons and protect them against toxic damage. Always consult your physician before taking acetyl-L-carnitine or any other supplement.
