The steam bath is a common sight in many pool and health club locker rooms. The basic design of the steam room is simple, and has remained relatively unchanged over thousands of years, consisting of an enclosed room with a steam generator. Users of steam baths claim a wide variety of benefits, from weight loss to improved energy. Before using a steam bath, consider the negatives as well as the possible benefits.

Hygiene

According to sports medicine internist Dr. Carol Otis, public amenities such as the steam bath can be breeding grounds for bacteria like athlete's foot and the potentially life-threatening MRSA. The hot, damp enclosed atmosphere allows germs to thrive. Avoid heavily trafficked steam baths unless they are frequently cleaned. Do not use a steam bath without rubber shower shoes and a towel to cover your bench.

Heat Illness

The steam bath combines high temperatures with very high humidity. If you are not used to these conditions, spending too much time in a steam bath could easily lead to heat illness. According to the Mayo Clinic, symptoms of heat exhaustion heat exhaustion may range from cramps to the much more dangerous heat exhaustion. Limit your first steam bath to no more than five minutes, gradually building up time as you get used to it.

Dehydration

Exposure to steam causes profuse sweating, which can quickly result in dehydration. Be especially careful if you use the steam bath after your workout. Following exercise, you might already be dehydrated, exacerbating the effects of the steam. Play it safe and drink water before, during and after your steam bath. Weigh yourself before and after using the steam bath. For every pound you have lost, drink 16 oz. of water.

Fatigue

Heat can have a draining effect, according to the American Council on Exercise. While spending time in a steam bath can have a relaxing effect, it's also easy to become fatigued. Avoid using the steam bath before strenuous workouts or athletic competition.
