Located along the rolling Mississippi River, the historical town of Galena, Illinois and the surrounding area offers plenty of outdoor recreation. The town itself offers fascinating architecture and a sense of how the Mississippi played such an important role in the town. Both a private and state park campground add to the mix, giving tenters and RVers several choices for staying overnight.

Location

Known as the home to nine Civil War generals and the country's 18th president, the town of Galena offers a unique historical glimpse into life along the Mississippi River. The town is located about two and a half hours west of Chicago in the northwest corner of the state. Interstate 90 brings visitors right into the town.

Public Camping

Apple River Canyon State Park features a public campground for both RVs and tent camping. The park offers 47 sites without showers or electricity although water is available. Each site features a picnic table and fire ring. No reservations are accepted for the campsites. The park offers a great way to see the area's wildlife along any of the trails that wind through the meadows and forests.

Private Camping

The Palace Campground in Galena offers 50 acres of camping sites just two miles from downtown Galena. Sites come equipped with water, electric and sewer combinations, although tenters are also welcome. The property features a heated swimming pool and baby pool along with a children's playground, clubhouse and basketball court. Last-minute camping supplies and firewood are also available at Palace.

Activities

A walk around the town of Galena offers insight into the town's history and architecture while providing opportunities to check out the thriving town's art galleries, boutique shops and antique stores. You can also enjoy nature with one of the five hiking and biking trails at Apple River Canyon State Park. Golf courses dot the area around Galena. Fishing for bass and crappie in area lakes, streams, and the Mississippi River remains popular, too. If you bring a boat, a launch is available at several locations in Galena. Kayaks and canoes may be rented in the town for trips down either the Mississippi or Galena rivers.

Preparation

If you plan to go fishing near Galena, an Illinois State fishing license is required and may be obtained from the local marina, bait shops, hardware stores and retail shops in Galena. The town also features grocery and general supply stores for stocking up. Firewood is available for purchase from the State Park or from the campground; firewood is also available at some of the stores in Galena. A pair of binoculars comes in handy for spotting wildlife or for looking at scenery along the Mississippi River. A can of bug spray will help keep the mosquitoes and other bugs at bay.
