Basketball guard training focuses on ballhandling, outside scoring and passing. While you must be naturally quick and agile to play the guard position, it is possible to improve those elements of your game through strength training and agility drills. During the offseason, it is important for you to familiarize yourself with many offensive plays and schemes. Watching NBA game footage is one way to get familiar with offensive schemes and looks.
Chair Curl Drill
The chair curl drill helps develop your shooting and dribbling as well as your ability to quickly change direction with the ball. Place a chair on the left corner of the foul line. Put a basketball on the chair and position yourself to the left side of the basketball hoop. On your coach's whistle, curl around the chair, pick up the ball and take a jump shot. Chase after your shot and put in a layup if you missed your shot. Dribble back around the chair, performing a cross over when you get to the chair. Take another shot and repeat the exercise.
Backup Dribble Drill
The backup dribble drill teaches you how to dribble and pass out of a trap defense. Have one player on your team stand at the baseline with a ball. On your coach's whistle, have him inbound the ball to you. As you dribble up the court, have two defenders attempt to trap you in the corner of the court. As they approach, cross over your dribble and try to pass them down the sideline. If the sideline is guarded, explode backward on your dribble and pass the ball over the heads of the defenders. According to Breakthrough Basketball, it is important to never turn your back to the defenders during this drill.
Rapid Fire Passing Drill
The rapid fire passing drill helps you improve your chest passes as well as your ability to catch a pass. Stand 2 feet from a wall with a basketball in your hands. On your coach's whistle, throw a chest pass at the wall. After the ball bounces back to you, move back 2 feet and throw another pass. Do this until you are 10 feet from the wall. At 10 feet, repeat the drill in the opposite direction, moving closer with each pass. According to The Coach's Clipboard, it is important for you to "step into" each pass that you throw in order to get a good ricochet off the wall.
2-on-1 Drill
The 2-on-1 drill teaches you how to pass during a 2-on-1 fast break. Line up at the baseline on one side of the rim while another player on your team lines up on the other side. On your coach's whistle, pass the ball to your teammate on the other side of the court. Have her dribble the ball twice and then back to you. Make your way down the court in this fashion and attempt a layup at the end of the court. A defender will stand at the end of the court and try to block your last pass or layup.
Dribble Baseline Shooting Drill
This dribble baseline shooting drill helps perfect your baseline jump shot as well as your offensive rebounding technique. Stand at the top of the key with a basketball in your dominant hand. On your coach's whistle, dribble with your weak hand down to the left baseline. Pivot your front foot and turn towards the basketball hoop for a jump shot. If you miss, retrieve your rebound and repeat the exercise. Make sure to fully extend your dominant arm when you shoot.
