Bike Trails Near Sanibel Island in Florida

One of the best ways to see Sanibel Island in Florida is by bike. This bike-friendly town features paved and hard pack sand trails with beach access. Trails run parallel to the water, through mangroves and by beautiful water front homes. Enjoy the coastal breezes and wildlife as you see the island from two wheels.

Wildlife Drive

Bring the fat tire bikes on this four-mile ride of hard sand and shells. It starts at Sanibel Captiva Road and ends at the N. "Ding" Darling National Wildlife Refuge. A bird observation tower, short off shoot trails and wildlife are all apart of this great ride. Take along a couple singles as the cost for bikes is $1 per person over the age of 16 and free for children 15 years and under. There is also four miles of paved trails in the park.

Rabbit Road Trail

Enjoy a bit of wildlife including rabbits, alligators, Herons and other birds on this one-mile paved stretch from Sanibel-Captive Road and West Gulf Drive. The path runs parallel to Rabbit Road and takes you along a canal with a drinking fountain at Sanibel Captiva Road.

Periwinkle Way

Starting at Periwinkle Way you can ride via Dixie Beach Road from the heart of the shopping district to San Carlos Bay, about one and a half miles. After enjoying the view of the bay, you can take a road of crushed shells to the old island and new island meet.

East Gulf Trail

This approximate three-mile paved path runs along parallel to the ocean. Start at Total East Gulf Drive to Periwinkle, Periwinkle to Lindgren. When you reach Lindgren pedal to Nerita to complete your ride. Beach access is available at multiple points on the ride.

Middle Gulf Cemetery Route

Starting east of Casa Ybel Road, this bike path will take you through the woods and leaves the leaves the road. The trail takes you to the Gulfside Park beach while passing a cemetery accessible only via the path and over a river.
