According to the American Diabetes Association, nearly 24 million Americans have diabetes, and another 57 million have pre-diabetes. As of 2006, diabetes is the seventh leading cause of death. Type 2 diabetes---also known as non-insulin dependent diabetes---has many complications, including heart disease, stroke, high blood pressure, blindness, kidney disease and nervous system disorders. The disease is preventable and treatable using natural remedies, conventional medicine or a combination. It's best to work with a licensed naturopathic physician or other health care professional to devise a personalized treatment plan.
Diet
According to a 2008 American Heart Association study, blood sugar abnormalities, such as type 2 diabetes, are strongly correlated with the Western diet---a diet high in calories, rich in refined foods, and low in fiber and essential nutrients. Drs. Joseph Pizzorno Jr. and Michael Murray, naturopathic physicians and authors of the "Textbook of Natural Medicine," recommend a diet high in complex carbohydrates and plant fiber, including vegetables, some fruits, legumes, whole grains and meats. Avoid simple sugars and refined carbohydrates, which cause an excessive insulin reaction.
Chromium
Chromium is a micronutrient that plays a significant role in insulin sensitivity. Pizzorno and Murray state that chromium deficiency may be an underlying factor in diabetes, and supplementation improves glucose tolerance, decreases fasting blood sugar and increases insulin sensitivity. While studies show promise for chromium's effectiveness in diabetes treatment, Pizzorno and Murray warn that it is not a "panacea."
Zinc
Zinc is a mineral involved in all aspects of insulin metabolism. Murray and Pizzorno report that it also protects pancreatic cells---the cells that secrete insulin. The Linus Pauling Micronutrient Center of Oregon State University additionally notes that zinc improves immune function and reduces oxidative stress in diabetics. Zinc is found in whole grains, legumes, nuts, seeds and supplements.
Gymnema Sylvestre
Gymnema is an Ayurvedic herb. According to Murray and Pizzorno, Gymnema increases glucose control, decreases excess insulin and regenerates pancreatic cells, Also, when the fresh plant or tincture is applied to the tongue, it blocks the sweet taste of foods. This may be helpful for people with excessive sugar craving.
Mormordica Charantia
Mormordica charantia---commonly known as bitter melon---is a fruit that grows in Asia, Africa and South America. According to Murray and Pizzorno, Momordica decreases blood sugar, increases glucose tolerance and reduces HgA1C---a blood marker of blood sugar control.
Exercise
Exercise has consistently been shown to enhance insulin sensitivity, improve glucose tolerance, improve ability to lose weight and reduce stress. Murray and Pizzorno recommend a fitness program based on individual fitness, and it should elevate the heart rate more than 50 percent for 30 minutes, three times a week.
Use an Individualized Approach
Options for treatment of type 2 diabetes abound. To find a treatment approach that is effective and best meets your individualized needs, consult with a holistically minded health care professional.
