Asian massage modalities focus on more than the muscles and tissue of your body. Massage styles like Tui-Na and Shiatsu aim to balance the internal energy that flows throughout and controls the body. If you want to incorporate Asian massage practices into your bodywork, there are a few simple things you can do to get started.

Obtain a Meridian Chart

If you are going to properly perform an Asian-style massage, you need to have basic knowledge of the energetic pathways that flow throughout the body. Your manipulations will focus on these pathways, not on the standard muscle groups of the body that Western massage addresses. A shop that specializes in alternative medicine should have simple energy maps for sale.

Use a Trigger Point Tool

Once you've located some key energy points, have tools available to manipulate them. According to the American Massage Therapy Association, digging into these points is known as acupressure. A simple acupressure tool has a rounded nub that you can push deep into the point. The sustained pressure that you apply with such a tool unblocks stagnant energy.

Focus on the Feet

Even if you don't have a good working knowledge of the Asian energetic meridians, a lot can be accomplished with some simple foot work. Associated Bodywork and Massage Professionals note that work on the foot known as reflexology is based on ancient Asian therapies that date back thousands of years. It's thought that work on the foot can correct the energy flow throughout the entire body. In Asian thought, a foot massage isn't just relaxing; it's a way to promote overall health and well-being.

Get Physical

Asian massage modalities are much more physical than their Western counterparts. The therapist will use more than their hands to spur the energy flow and work the meridians. Don't be afraid to dig in using your forearms, elbows or even your knees. Since the client is fully-clothed during a traditional Asian massage, you don't have to worry about crossing inappropriate boundaries when you provide this full body manipulation.
