Volleyball is one of the most popular youth girls' sports in the United States. It is taught in both recreational leagues and physical education classes and helps children develop hand-eye coordination and interpersonal skills while also having fun. Volleyball utilizes a unique skill set that is rarely used outside of the sport. To better develop these fundamentals, drills are often used to teach the basics of the abilities needed to play the sport.

Coverage Drill

This drill helps players develop offensive skills needed to back up other teammates when a return over the net is blocked. To perform this drill, line six players up in a normal set. This group is the receiving side of the court. Then place two blockers in each of the three blocking zones---left, center and right---on the other side of the net. The coach will toss the ball to the receiving side of the floor, which will handle the toss as it would a serve. The team should attempt to return the ball low over the net, where it is likely to be blocked by the opposing team. This forces the ball back to the receiving side and demands that the front court players be aware and save the ball before it hits the ground. If the players can save the ball and return it to the control of the receiving side, they win the drill.

4 x 2 Pepper Drill

The pepper drill helps players learn to contact the ball in different ways and through various approaches. It also helps improve ball control. Players should be divided up into pairs. One player in each pair takes the ball and bumps it to her partner. The second player goes through a series of different hits, starting by digging the ball to herself, single-hand punching up and back to herself, performing bumps with each hand individually, then setting the ball and bumping it back to the first player, who goes through this process on her own. This continues until the drill session ends. When the ball is dropped, it should be picked up by the player committing the error and tossed to the other member of the pair.

Rapid Set Drill

Setting is a highly technical and important skill used in volleyball. This drill helps players refine their setting ability. This drill requires two players on one side of the net and a third player across the net. Player 2 sets up at the front middle position, with player 1 at the back middle position. Player 3 sets in the front middle and tosses the ball across the net to player 1, who sets the ball to player 2. This player then sets the ball over the net to player 3. Player 3 throws a new ball each time player 1 sets the ball, keeping the setting rapid and consistent.
