Obagi Nu-Derm Gentle Cleanser is a delicate skin cleansing cream. It is designed to rinse clean away. To use, apply the cleanser to the face and neck using wet fingertips and then rinse away with water. Other than water and fragrance, it has 16 ingredients.

Surfactants

Surfactants are agents that create a uniform coverage of the product through making a thin film for it to glide upon. There are four surfactants in the Obagi Cleanser and they are cocamidopropyl betaine, sodium lauroyl oat amino acids, sodium laureth sulfate and apricot triethanolamine. Sodium laureth sulfate is also a detergent cleanser, according to Cosmetics Cop. Sodium lauroyl oat amino acids is also an antistatic and apricot triethanolamine is also a fragrance, according to Environmental Working Group's Skin Deep database.

Preservatives

Preservatives help inhibit the growth of mold, fungi and bacteria. There are five preservatives in this cleanser: phenoxythanol, ethylparaben, butylparaben, propylparaben and methylparaben. The parabens are the more gentle preservatives, due to them not releasing formaldehyde, according to Cosmetics Info. Phenoxythanol is also able to act as a fragrance as well, states Skin Deep.

Humectants

Humectants are agents that aid in hydrating the skin by adding moisture. There are two humectants in the Obagi Cleanser: glycerin and glycerth-7. Glycerth-7 is also a thinning agent that decreases the viscosity of the product, according to Skin Deep. Glycerin is a natural fat and aids in maintaining the water barrier in skin, according to Cosmetics Cop.

Botanicals

There are three botanicals in the Obagi Nu-Derm Gentle Cleanser: aloe barbadensis, sage extract and borage extract. Aloe improves the skin by reducing flaking and may improve skin inflammation, according to Cosmetics Info. Sage extract is a powerful antioxidant that fights free radical skin damage, according to Cosmetics Cop. Borage extract also conditions the skin, according to Skin Deep.

Antioxidant

There is one other antioxidant in the cleanser, saponins, which is found in plants and is a natural carbohydrate, according to Cosmetics Cop.

Coloring

There is one colorant in the Obagi cleanser: FD&C yellow 5. It is also reviewed and cleared by the Food and Drug Administration as safe for use, according to Cosmetics Info.
