Yasmin is a brand of birth control pills made with drospirenone and ethinyl estradiol. Drugs.com explains that these two drugs work together to prevent the release of an egg from an ovary and to change the cervical and uterine lining to make it more difficult for sperm to reach the uterus. It is suggested that the drugs also make it more difficult for a fertilized egg to attach to the uterus. Yasmin is only available via prescription from a medical care provider. The pill is nearly 100 percent effective in preventing pregnancy when taken as directed.

Step 1

Decide whether to start the pill on a Sunday or the first day after the next menstrual period. Either start day is effective but one may be easier for a woman to keep track of than the other. When starting on a Sunday, a woman takes the first active pill in the pack on the Sunday after her period. When using the "day 1 start" method, the first pill in the pack is taken during the first 24 hours of the menstrual period, explains Bayer Healthcare.

Step 2

Continue taking one pill per day at the same time of day, which means taking a pill every 24 hours for 21 days. This means taking all of the yellow active pills.

Step 3

Take the seven white inactive pills for the next seven days. These pills don't contain drugs but serve the purpose of keeping a woman on her routine of taking a pill at the same time every day. She will have her menstrual period during this week.

Step 4

Start a new pack of Yasmin after finishing the inactive pills. For women who chose the Sunday start, this would mean starting a new pack on Sunday. For women who chose the other start day, the pill pack will be started on the same day of the week as the last pack.

Step 5

Make up a missed pill as soon as it is remembered and take the next pill at the regularly scheduled time, even if this means taking two pills in one day. If two pills are missed within the first two weeks of the pack, take two pills on the current day and take two pills the next day. Use a backup birth control method during intercourse for the seven days following the missed pills. If two or more active pills are missed during the third week, throw out the current birth control pack and start a new pack on that same day. For women who started on a Sunday, throw out this new pack and start a new pack on Sunday. Take one pill per day until the pack has been completed. Use a back up birth control method during intercourse until seven days of pills are taken on schedule. The menstrual period may be skipped due to missing so many pills.
