Desiccated Thyroid Side Effects

Desiccated thyroid is a thyroid supplement derived from pork thyroid glands and is used to treat hypothyroidism. Hypothyroidism occurs when the thyroid gland does not produce enough thyroid hormone. According to Medline Plus, a publication of the National Institutes of Health, the best-known brand name of desiccated thyroid in America is Armour. Desiccated thyroid works by supplying the thyroid hormone normally produced by the body. The hormone works to control the symptoms of hypothyoidism such as a lack of energy, constipation, weight gain and decreased concentration, but it does not cure hypothyroidism. Medline Plus reports that in order to treat the symptoms of hypothyroidism, most patients will need to take the thyroid hormone for the rest of their lives. Patients should be instructed to continue to take their thyroid hormone even if they are feeling well and to not stop taking the drug without talking with their doctors.

Cardiovascular Symptoms

According to Medline Plus, some patients taking desiccate thyroid may experience cardiovascular side effects like facial flushing, chest pain, rapid or irregular heart beat and difficulty breathing or shortness of breath. Patients may also experience swelling of the hands, feet, ankles or legs. Patients who experience any of these symptoms should seek medical attention immediately.

Central Nervous System Symptoms

Drugs.com reports that some patients may experience central nervous system side effects while taking desiccated thyroid such as tremors, headache, nervousness and insomnia. Medline Plus adds that side effects like anxiety, irritability, hyperactivity and seizures have also been noted. Patients who experience any of these symptoms should notify their physicians immediately.

Gastrointestinal Symptoms

According to Medline Plus, desiccated thyroid can cause gastrointestinal side effects like nausea, vomiting, stomach cramps, diarrhea, increased appetite and weight loss. If these symptoms are severe or worsen, patients should seek medical attention.

Other Symptoms

Other symptoms that may accompany the use of desiccated thyroid include fever, heat intolerance and hair loss, according to Drugs.com. Patients may experience changes in their menstrual cycles such as frequency or duration of menstrual period. Some patients may experience a skin rash. Again, patients exhibiting any of these side effects should consult their doctors.
