Hair fall can be a side effect of some types of dandruff, while other types of dandruff may cause itching or inflammation that causes hair loss. If you've noticed flaking and hair loss, there are several things you can try at home to reduce these annoyances. Of course, if you still experience hair loss or significant dandruff scaling, contact your physician for an examination.

Stop Scratching

Dandruff may be difficult to ignore, but it's important that you don't try to scratch away any flakes. According to Medical News Today, 90 minutes of scratching can permanently damage the cuticle scale. This damage is irreversible and can lead to hair fall and thinning. A shampoo that contains zinc pyrithione can help protect the hair from scratching and forms a barrier that prevents regrowth of dandruff causing fungus.

Practice Good Hygiene

If you've noticed more hair in the drain, you may be tempted to wash your hair less often. However, infrequent hair washing can cause a build up of dead skin cells and oils, leading to dandruff and itching. Washing your hair regularly won't cause more hair fall; just gently wash your hair. Allow the hair to partially air dry before brushing it out with a wide toothed comb and never use a brush on wet hair.

Use Dandruff Shampoo

There are many dandruff shampoos with various active ingredients, so try all of them at home before getting a prescription. According to the Mayo Clinic, there are five different types of dandruff shampoos. Zinc pyrithione and ketoconazole shampoos have antifungal properties to kill the cause of dandruff. Coal tar based shampoos, as well as shampoos that contain selenium sulfide, slow the dying and shedding process of cells. Salicylic acid shampoos help reduce flakes, but can cause dryness over time. No matter which shampoo you use, leave it on for at least 5 minutes before rinsing. Plan on using it every day until your dandruff is under control, then use it several times a week for maintenance purposes.

Avoid Stress

Stress can cause hair loss and exacerbate or trigger dandruff notes the Mayo Clinic. Be sure to take time for yourself and maintain a healthy life balance. If you find it difficult to avoid routine stress, you may need to see a medical professional for management tips.

Spend Time Outdoors

Despite the dangers of sunlight for the skin, a little bit of sun on your scalp can help reduce dandruff. Try spending some time out of doors, but be sure to wear sunscreen on exposed skin. Also avoid sunbathing, which could increase your risk of skin cancer.
