A session of reflexology massage focuses entirely on the feet. The therapist will work the foot, particularly the sole, with the aim of creating benefits throughout the entire body. Reflexology is commonly used on patients who are severely injured or too frail to expose other areas of their body to massage.
History
According to the Associated Bodywork and Massage Professionals website, reflexology has been part of Chinese medicinal practices since ancient times. The practice is used in combination with traditional herbs and Tui-Na body massage to treat a wide number of disorders.
Theory
The theory behind reflexology posits that each area of the body is connected to an area on the foot. The therapist works the foot to have a positive effect on the corresponding bodily area. The reflexology work is thought to improve the well-being of the targeted area and have a positive effect on the body as a whole.
Strokes
A reflexology session is built around a few key strokes. First, the therapist will warm the foot tissue up with simple, gliding strokes like those common in traditional Swedish massage. Then, the therapist will target specific areas of the body using thumbs. he will press deeply into the area and move the thumb to stimulate the energy flow in the corresponding area of the body.
Scene
The recipient will lay face up on a massage table or sit in a specially designed reflexology chair, while the therapist will sit near their feet. During reflexology, the client remains fully clothed. This makes it an ideal modality for those who are uncomfortable with the disrobing that is involved in traditional Swedish bodywork. Because the therapist works the foot for the entire session, this is an ideal massage modality for those who are bed-ridden or have injuries that preclude work on other areas.
Effectiveness
The connection between the reflexology foot map and different areas of the body has not been scientifically proven. A study published in the September 2009 "Complementary Medicine" journal found that reflexology is not an effective treatment for any serious medical condition. Even so, the practice is widely used and can soothe and calm those who cannot receive typical massage therapy.
