Colon cleansing products promise to purify the bottom by removing toxins that supposedly accumulate in the colon. Herbal products may advertise themselves as less harsh than chemicals or as a natural product. According to Harvard Medical School, there is no evidence to suggest that colon cleanses, herbal or otherwise are effective. Such cleanses can also have potentially dangerous side effects.
Dehydration
Cleansing herbs such as senna or cascara sagrada can trigger diarrhea, a condition which can cause you to lose a large amount of fluids in a short period of time. Dehydration can cause rapid heartbeat, low blood pressure or loss of consciousness, according to Mayo Clinic.com
Electrolyte Imbalance
Another possible consequence of the diarrhea caused by herbal laxatives used in colon cleansing in loss of potassium and other electrolytes necessary for the body's performance. The University of Florida Shands Cancer Center notes that electrolyte imbalances can lead to heart arrhythmia, weakness, confusion and even seizures.
Constipation
Once you've endured the diarrhea of the colon cleanse and stop taking the cleansing product, you could find yourself with the opposite problem--constipation. Senna, one ingredient used in herbal colon cleansing, can create a dependency in the body, according to the University of Michigan Health System. When you stop taking the senna, you may have difficulty having a bowel movement.
Bacteria Imbalance
Normally, your colon contains beneficial bacteria that assists in digestion and keeps your intestines functioning smoothly. Herbal colon cleansing can strip this bacteria from your intestines. Without the presence of this beneficial bacteria, you could battle diarrhea, cramping, constipation and stomach upset.
