Everything you need to lose weight can be found in the gym. Cardiovascular and resistance training machines are available to burn calories and gain muscle tone. Personal trainers and dietitians are usually available to point you in the right direction regarding your weight loss plan. With helpful staff, and by seeing others like yourself at the gym, you can achieve your weight loss goals.

Benefits

The gym has cardiovascular and resistance training equipment to help you lose weight. If you do not know how to use the equipment, personal trainers and fitness staff are usually available for help. Aerobics classes or fitness programs offered at your facility help prevent boredom while also burning calories. If a pool is available, swimming and water aerobics classes are weight loss options.

Types

There are several types of workout plans to choose from at the gym. The American College of Sports Medicine recommends 20 to 60 minutes of physical activity three to five days per week. However, 60 to 90 minutes of physical activity may be necessary to achieve or maintain weight loss. Your workout routine can consist of three days on a cardiovascular machine and two days on resistance machines. Two days of aerobics classes and one day of weight lifting is also an option. You can perform three days of cardio machines with two of those days also involving strength exercises. The options are endless when creating a routine at the gym.

Considerations

Consider asking for help at the gym. Most facilities have personal trainers available to create a routine specifically for your needs. Personal trainers are certified fitness professionals who create workout plans designed just for you. They also ensure all exercises are performed correctly to maximize weight loss and to prevent injuries. Most gyms have a dietitian or nutritionist on staff. According to the U.S. Department of Labor, "Dietitians and nutritionists plan food and nutrition programs, supervise meal preparation and oversee the serving of meals. They prevent and treat illnesses by promoting healthy eating habits and recommending dietary modifications." A workout plan will not work unless you create a caloric deficit.

Potential

There is lots of potential to lose weight at the gym. When working out at home, you may sometimes be alone. At the gym, you are surrounded by people with similar goals. Seeing people in better, or worse, physical shape than yourself can be motivation to stick with, or improve, your workout routine. The gym is staffed with people who want to help you achieve weight loss success.

Geography

Choosing a gym that is near your home, work place or wherever you spend most of your day will make it easier to complete workouts. If the gym is close enough to your home, running or biking to get there will help burn extra calories before and after your workout. Having the gym close to your work place makes it possible to work out during your lunch break. If your child has soccer practice five days a week in another town, maybe join a gym near that location to get the most from the commute.
