Hearing aids are battery-operated devices that are worn in the ear to improve hearing. Typically, the device is worn every hour of the day that an individual is awake. The ear mold is the part of the hearing aid that goes inside the ear. It is exposed to dirt, wax and skin cells, making it necessary to clean the device carefully every day. Most hearing aid manufacturers sell or provide a cleaning kit for the device or a hearing aid professional can recommend one.
Step 1
Remove the ear mold from the ear. Use a cotton swab to remove visible ear wax from the outer ear and to wipe the other parts of the outer ear.
Step 2
Open the battery compartment and take out the hearing aid battery.
Step 3
Inspect all parts of the hearing aid for visible debris or wax. Using a wax pick from the hearing aid cleaning kit, carefully withdraw the wax. Avoid shoving it further inside the small crevices of the ear mold. Use an earwax air blower from the kit to force wax from the small compartments of the hearing aid. The air blower can be used to force wax through tubing that connects the ear mold to the outer ear piece, when applicable.
Step 4
Wipe all the areas of the ear mold with cleansing wipes from the kit. These wipes are alcohol-free and safe for use on the electronic parts of the ear mold. A mild soap and a small amount of water with a soft cloth can also be used to clean the ear mold.
Step 5
Brush the battery with a soft brush to remove any debris. Clean the inside of the battery compartment with the brush or the air blower.
Step 6
Wash any outer ear compartments, such as a pad or component that keeps the aid in place. The cleansing wipes or soft cloth with soap and water are sufficient for cleaning these parts.
Step 7
Rinse the device after cleaning. Leave the parts separated overnight. In the morning, put the hearing aid back together and place it in the ear.
