Greenville, North Carolina provides an array of outdoor fun and recreation. In fact, it was once given the honorable nickname of "Sportstown" by "Sports Illustrated." A day at the beach is one of the most enjoyable luxuries of living in the busy town of Greenville. Since it is located near the coast of the Atlantic Ocean, there are many beach destinations to choose from in the area. Below are five of the highest-rated beaches every Greenville visitor and resident should know.

Atlantic Beach

Atlantic Beach is one of the most scenic towns in North Carolina and located on the island of Bogue Banks, approximately 80 miles from Greenville. It features many public beaches along the state's famed Crystal Coast. The Atlantic Beach Parks & Recreation Committee takes care to plan many fun activities, such as outdoor movies and beach volleyball games.

Wrightsville Beach

Wrightsville Beach is one of the most well known beaches in the state of North Carolina. It is less than 150 miles from Greenville and offers a wide array of activities for beach goers. From sailing and surfing to outdoor sports like volleyball, the coastal town is the perfect place for a summer getaway. Nearby restaurants, shopping and nightlife attractions ensure that people both young and old enjoy Wrightsville Beach.

Carolina Beach

Carolina Beach, located less than 150 miles from Greenville, is a popular North Carolina beach. The community has an active parks and recreation department that offers many activities to the public. A staff of trained lifeguards can also be found on the shores, which helps to ensure visitor safety. Fishing, kayaking, surfing and swimming are but a few activities to enjoy on Carolina Beach. Other seasonal events, such as a large fireworks display, help to set the community apart from other coastal areas.

Kure Beach

Kure Beach is referred to as North Carolina's "small wonder." Located approximately 150 miles from Greenville, it is a family-oriented beach community on the Cape Fear coastline. Boating and fishing are but a few activities that Kure Beach is known for. The nearby North Carolina Aquarium offers an up close view of marine animals such as sharks and although it is a small community, the bustling city of Wilmington is just a few miles away from Kure Beach.

Cape Hatteras National Seashore

Hatteras Island is located less than 200 miles from Greenville, North Carolina. There, the Cape Hatteras National Seashore offers beautiful beaches and many recreational activities, such as fishing and surfing. The Cape Hatteras Lighthouse is a popular tourist attraction for those wishing to see an overhead view of the surrounding sand and sea.
