After a hard workout, a long day at work or a minor foot injury, some foot pampering might be just what you need to feel refreshed and relaxed. Aromatherapy uses essential oils derived from plants to promote healing, pain relief and relaxation. Two ways to harness the oils' healing properties for your own feet are to create a massage oil or a soothing foot soak. Both treatments provide similar benefits. Choose the treatment you'll enjoy most.

Massage

Step 1

Choose a carrier oil, such as jojoba, sweet almond or olive oil. Add three to five drops of essential oils per tablespoon of oil to make a therapeutic massage oil, according to the article "Foot Aromatherapy for Troubled Feet" published on TheFunTimesGuide.com.

Step 2

Use tea tree oil for athlete's foot. Tea tree oil has anti-fungal properties, according to MayoClinic.com. Lavender oil may offer similar benefits. Use peppermint oil to soothe tired, achy feet. Use lemon oil to help stimulate circulation, according to Aromatherapy At Home. Use rosemary oil for foot pain.

Step 3

Wash your feet and pat dry. Massage the carrier oil and essential oil blend into your feet and calves. Vary your pressure to stimulate blood flow to your feet. Wear clean cotton socks to keep the oils in contact with your feet after your massage ends.

Soak

Step 1

Place your basin in front of a comfortable chair. Fill it with very warm but not hot water. Gather a towel and your favorite essential oils. Sit in your chair but don't yet put your feet in the water.

Step 2

Add around 2 to 4 drops each of your favorite essential oils. Use your foot to swish the oils around in the water to distribute them evenly.

Step 3

Soak your feet in the basin until the water cools, at least 20 minutes. Use an electric foot massage or pedicure basin if you'd like to keep the water warm for an extended period of time.

Step 4

Pat feet dry or wear clean cotton socks to keep the oils close to your skin after your soak.

Things You'll Need
