Home Remedy to Get Rid of Dark Under Eye Circles

No one wants to look in the mirror and see those tell-tale under eye circles. They can be caused by many things. When you're young, it's often because you have stayed out late and did not get enough sleep. As you age, those dark under eye circles usually stem from a number of other factors: stress, dehydration, lack of sleep, poor diet or simply the aging process itself. Before running to the cosmetics counter and spending a lot of money, try one or all of the following methods to get rid of those dark under eye circles.

Step 1

Wash a chilled cucumber. Slice off two 1/4-inch-thick pieces. Make sure the cucumbers are chilled, as it is the coolness of the cucumber that relieves the inflammation and dark circles under the eyes. Lie down in a relaxing place and put one over each eye. Relax with the cucumbers on your eyes for at least 15 minutes. After 15 minutes, rinse your eye area with cool water and pat dry.

Step 2

Boil 2 teabags for three minutes. Squeeze out the excess liquid and put the teabags in the freezer to chill. When they are cold, but not frozen, take the teabags out, find a relaxing place to put your head back, and place them on the eyes for 10 minutes. The caffeine in the teabags helps draw out any excess fluid under the eye. It also stimulates blood circulation to the area, which regulates the coloring of the skin. The coolness of the teabags, like the cucumbers, relieves any puffiness or irritation, and lightens the color of the skin tone. It is not recommended to use herbal teas for this remedy.

Step 3

Place some pure almond oil on your clean fingertips, and gently massage it into the under eye area. The almond oil penetrates the skin, providing nourishment, and the light massage stimulates circulation. Keep the almond oil chilled. It may thicken, but the coolness of the oil will help relieve the dark circles under the eyes.

Tips and Warnings

  • Always be gentle when dealing with the skin area under the eyes. Excess tugging or pulling on the skin can damage the skin's capillaries and cause the eye circles to appear darker. Make sure you are eating more natural food than processed food. A diet high in fresh fruits and vegetables assures you are getting adequate amounts of the vitamins and minerals needed to maintain good health. Fruits and vegetables are also full of antioxidants such as C, E and B vitamins, which help prevent or slow the signs of aging. Exercise increases blood circulation throughout the body, taking much needed oxygen and nutrients to skin cells, contributing to even skin tone.
  • If your under eye circles show no signs of improvement, or get darker, see your physician to rule out any other medical problems. The body repairs itself during sleep, and lack of it can show deterioration on the outside of our bodies, such as bags under the eyes. The sun's UV rays can cause damage to the skin. Wear large sunglasses that protect the sensitive skin under the eyes, as well as a moisturizer with a sunscreen of a minimum of SPF 15.
