Folliculitis is an infection of the hair follicles, often caused by bacteria. It appears on the skin as small, white-headed pimples at the site of each affected hair follicle. The inflammation can cause itching and sometimes pain. Most cases of folliculitis clear up on their own within a few days. Serious, recurring folliculitis may need medical treatment. While waiting for the infection to clear, you can try to reduce the inflammation in several ways.

Step 1

Soak a washcloth with warm or hot water and wring it out. Apply the cloth to the skin until the cloth cools. Repeat this several times a day. Warmth and moisture encourages the infection to drain from the follicles, which can stop inflammation and other symptoms. Soaking the cloth with a mixture of 1 part white vinegar and 4 parts water may also help.

Step 2

Wash the affected area with an antibacterial soap. MotherNature.com suggests rubbing the area with a washcloth with the antibacterial soap. Rinse thoroughly and pat the area dry.

Step 3

Apply a thin layer of hydrocortisone, antibacterial cream or oatmeal lotion to the affected area once or twice a day. These solutions can reduce bacteria and calm the inflammation.

Step 4

Avoid shaving or using harsh personal care products on the affected area until the infection has resolved. Discard disposable razors or change razor blades if you've used them on the infected skin. Bacteria can contaminate the surface of the blades and increase the risk of future infection.

Things You'll Need

  • Washcloth
  • White vinegar
  • Antibacterial soap
  • Antibacterial ointment, oatmeal lotion or hydrocortisone cream
