Excessive perspiration, or hyperhidrosis, can occur in the underarms, palms or soles of the feet. It can cause embarrassment in business or social settings, ruin clothing and in severe cases make it hard to hold a pen, grip a car's steering wheel and perform daily tasks. While there is currently no cure for this condition, there are some remedies and treatments that can be used for excessive perspiration.

Botox Injections

Botulinum toxin injections in the armpits, hands and feet have been shown to help in relieving excessive perspiration, claims the International Hyperhidrosis Society. This protein works by blocking the production of chemicals that make the body sweat. It is effective only in the area where the injection is received. This treatment should be administered by a qualified physician and it only lasts temporarily, so future injections are necessary. The length of time an injection is effective depends on the severity of the condition and the general health of the patient.

Iontophoresis

Iontophoresis involves using a handheld device that delivers a low current of electricity through water-saturated wool pads. The goal is to alter the skin to hinder the ability of sweat to reach the outer layers of the skin, states the Mayo Clinic. This procedure can be uncomfortable and needs to be administered three to four times a day for four weeks for results that last several weeks. The procedure then needs to be repeated.

Antiperspirants and Medications

Prescription-strength antiperspirants containing aluminum chloride can be applied daily to help plug up the sweat glands. MedlinePlus states that this may or may not be combined with medications called anticholinergics, which hinder stimulation of the sweat glands. However, both have side effects, so a period of trial and error may be needed to find the right dose that is tolerable.

Relaxation Therapies

Living with excessive sweating can be stressful, and stress may trigger symptoms. The International Hyperhidrosis Society suggests talking with a physician about alternative therapies to help lower stress levels. This can include biofeedback, hypnosis or a meditation technique. Acupuncture is another therapy that may help to calm the nervous system and provide some relief.
