Provillus hair-loss treatment is available without a prescription. It contains the FDA-approved drug minoxidil, which according to the Provillus official website has been clinically proven to regrow hair when hair loss is caused by male pattern baldness or female pattern baldness. Provillus is available in formulations for both men and women.

Types

Provillus for men includes a topical solution of 5 percent minoxidil and an accompanying dietary supplement that contains ingredients said to support healthy hair growth and to balance testosterone. Provillus for women is a topical solution of 2 percent minoxidil. The dietary supplement for women is said to stimulate hair growth and to nourish hair follicles.

Use

The topical solution is applied twice daily by placing a drop of Provillus liquid on the balding area of your scalp. You massage it into your skin and hair and allow the solution to dry. Wash your hands thoroughly after coming into contact with topical Provillus. The dietary supplements are to be taken twice daily as well.

Effects

Hair-loss treatments with minoxidil may cause a slowing of hair loss and regrowth of hair, according to the Mayo Clinic website. The new hair may be thinner and shorter. When you stop using minoxidil, new hair growth stops also.

Time Frame

New hair may take up to 12 weeks to grow in. The Mayo Clinic website suggests that you allow six months; if you don't see new hair growth during that time, discuss further options with your doctor.

Warnings

You may experience side effects with minoxidil, including an actual increase in hair loss. Other possible side effects include skin rash, scalp irritation, increased facial hair and redness of the scalp. If too much minoxidil is absorbed into your body, you might experience chest pain, dizziness, fainting, irregular heartbeat, numbness of your extremities and changes in your vision. Women should never use Provillus for men, and vice versa. Discuss the ingredients in the Provillus supplement with your doctor before taking them, especially if you're being treated for a medical condition or are taking prescription drugs. Herbs can sometimes have adverse side effects and interfere with the function of medications.
