According to Healthy Children, playing sports can promote fitness and increase self-confidence. Football is a common sport among many children because it is easy to play and enjoyable as well. Many children like playing football according to traditional rules but there are many other games children can play with a football.

Saving Tackle

Saving Tackle is an idea offered by Brian Urlacher, a linebacker for the Chicago Bears, on NFL Play 60, a website designed to encourage children to get active for at least 60 minutes a day. The game is played with at least 20 players and takes between 10 and 15 minutes. To start, the children are divided into two groups and they line up facing toward the front. The lines should be about 5 feet apart and the players should be far enough apart that a player can run between them. The head player of one line is the quarterback and the head player of the other line is the defender. At the whistle, the quarterback starts weaving between players down his line and up the opposite line. The defender has to chase the quarterback keeping the same path as the quarterback. If the quarterback makes it to the head of the second line, he then goes to the foot of his own line. If the quarterback gets caught, the defender goes to the end of the first line and the quarterback takes the place of the defender for the next round.

Down The Line

Eli Manning, quarterback of the New York Giants, suggests that Down the Line can be played with six to 20 players in 15 to 20 minutes. The players stand in two straight lines facing one another. The object of the game is to pass a football diagonally up and down the line. Manning suggests timing how long it takes for the players to pass the football and to increase the spacing of the line for an extra challenge.

Football Toss

Football Toss is a game created by Drew Brees, quarterback of the New Orleans Saints. It is meant to be played with two to 10 players and requires footballs, cones and small balls. To begin, the players are divided into groups of two or three. The cones are set up directly across of each player with a small ball on top. The first player in each group throws the football at the ball, trying to knock it off the cone. When successful, the football is passed to next player in the group. Groups have two minutes to knock all the balls off of their cones.
