Soccer, also known as football, is the world's most popular sport. Football shooting drills are an important aspects of a soccer team's training regime. When coaching a shooting session, a coach should remain upbeat and enthusiastic throughout the session. A coach must celebrate goals scored energetically, and give constructive criticism if players miss shots. It is important to build confidence and diminish fear of failure during shooting practice.
Coconut Shy
The coconut shy soccer drill develops accurate shooting. Divide your team into pairs, and rest a target ball on a cone. Have two soccer players facing each other, with a ball in the middle of them. Begin with each soccer player five to 10 yards away from the ball. Increase the distance after they gain a relative level of success. Player A shoots a ball and aims to hit the ball off the cone. After a player scores a point, he must run to put the ball back on the cone. Player B then shoots one of his balls. Players alternate turns, and should practice shooting with the side of the foot and the laces. Make it competitive by awarding one point for each time the ball is knocked off. Time a three-minute game, and the player with the most points when time expires is the winner.
King of the Castle
The king of the castle drill develops the ability to shoot under defensive pressure. It also incorporates the skills of passing and movement off the ball to find space to maneuver. Make a 3-yard square with cones, and rest a ball on a cone. This is the castle, and it should have a circle surrounding it. Make the circle 5 to 7 yards in diameter. Only the defender is allowed inside the circle, and the three attacking soccer players can pass and move freely outside the circle. The three attacking soccer players try to knock the balls off the cones. The attacking team must knock all four balls off the cones to win. The attacker who scores the most goals is the winner.
Three on Two
Three on two is a soccer drill that practices shooting in a game-like situation under full defensive pressure. The defensive soccer players begin on the 18-yard line with the three attackers lining up 10 yards farther back. The drill begins with a ball played to the defender, who passes the ball back to any attacking soccer player. The attackers then try to score against the two defenders. Encourage players to shoot whenever they have the chance in and around the 18-yard area. If you wish to work on distance shooting, award one point for a goal and two points for a goal from outside the penalty area.
