There are several basic skills for beginning volleyball players to master as well as understanding the rules of the game. Basic volleyball skills involve passing, setting, serving and attacking the ball. Understanding the rotation of players may be difficult at first, but the basic rules of volleyball should be easy to understand.

Game Play

An indoor volleyball match is played to the best three out of five games, according to Volleyball Advisors. Each game continues until a team scores 25 points. The fifth and deciding game continues until a team scores 15 points. A winning team must lead by 2 points in order to win each game. For example, if the score is 25-24 then the game must continue until the leading team scores a 26th point provided that the opposing team doesn't tie the game. This rule also applies to the deciding game in that a score of 15-14 is not sufficient to win the game.

Players

Each team has six players on the court arranged in two rows of three players, according to Volleyball Advisors. Players rotate clockwise from the player on the back right of the court after a sideout. A sideout occurs when a team wins the ball after their opponents' serve. For example, the player serving the ball stands on the back right of the court near the endline. The player serving the ball will move to the position on his left after a sideout while the player who was on the back left side of the court moves to the left side of the front row. The player who was on the front right of the court moves off the court and a new player assumes the role of server.

Skills

Each rally in a volleyball game begins with a serve from one team and continues until either team scores a point. Each team has a maximum of three hits to play the ball over the net toward the opposing team, according to Volleyball Advisors. Passing the ball helps continue a play and can involve a bump with the forearms or an overhand pass. A player blocks a shot by leaping with his arms over head and intercepting the ball almost after the opponent strikes it toward him. Blockers use the palm of the hand with fingers spread and thumbs facing upward, according to Volleyball Rules. Digging is a blocking technique that involves stopping the ball near the ground before it hits your side of the court. A player uses a set to prepare the ball for an attack shot such as a spike. Players can use either an overhand set by striking the ball with both palms or a bump. An attack is the last contact that an offensive team makes with the ball. The goal of the attack is to send the ball across the net in a way that makes the opposing team unable to counter and return.
