Known as a prominent center for business and entertainment, Houston is also a great city for engaging in outdoor activities. Several parks are located in the Houston region which are great for hiking and mountain biking, while the sprawling layout of the city itself beckons exploration by foot. There are a myriad of activities in and around Houston to engage visitors of all ages.
Hiking
Bayou Park and the Brazoria National Wildlife Refuge are home to several nature trails that are great for hiking and wildlife observation. The 5,000-acre Brazos Bend State Park, home to over 300 species of wildlife, is located minutes from downtown.
Biking
Several great mountain bike trails are located in and around Houston. The looping bike path at Huntsville State Park is comprised of mostly soft terrain and is an exciting ride for mountain bikers of all ages. Memorial Park, located in the center of the city, is an oasis of great mountain biking.
Disc Golf
Visitors can bring their own Frisbees and take in a few rounds of disc golf at one of several Houston area park locations. Seven Houston courses are located in such parks as Agnes Moffitt Park, MacGregor Park and Nottingham Park. It's a great way to enjoy the outdoors and some friendly competition.
Walking Tour
Walking tours are a great way to get some exercise while immersing yourself in the cultural fabric and history of Houston. The Discover Houston tour company offers walking tours daily that explore everything from the Downtown Historic District to Houston Museum of Fine Arts.
Climbing
Indoor climbing is a great way to beat the Texas heat while honing your climbing skills. Lessons for beginners and experts are offered at Houston's Stone Moves indoor rock climbing facility. Gear and safety instruction are provided on-site by qualified teachers.
