Although not popularly known to New York's tourists, Williamsburg, Brooklyn, is a hip neighborhood with plenty to do and see for those who are health-and-fitness minded, particularly around the Williamsburg Music Hall. Choose from a range of activities such as enriching your mind at Williamburg's cultural centers, heading to the park for some sports or enjoying Wiliamsburg's array of healthy eateries. Be sure to travel by foot for some fun exercise.

Cultural Enrichment

Whether it's a sultry Brooklyn summer or frigid wintertime, head indoors for an educational experience. Williamsburg houses two nonprofit organizations that host locally themed exhibits of arts and artifacts. The Williamsburg Art & Historical Center, in a historical building built in 1867, hosts exhibits of art, dance and music performances, as well as lectures. The City Reliquary is an organization as well as a museum, with exhibits featuring a variety of art and artifacts. Learning can have a variety of benefits for your health, according to studies at Niace, the National Organization for Adult Learning, in Leicester, England, such as relieving symptoms of serious illness or depression.

Shopping

If you're looking to get out and about, take advantage of Williamsburg's eclectic shopping scene by foot. Williamsburg has a collection of unique thrift shops, upscale boutiques and specialty stores that you can enjoy, giving you an excuse for walking through the Williamsburg area and getting some exercise and a little sun. Head to one-of-a-kind stores like Brooklyn Kitchen on Lorimer St., a kitchen supply store and also a cooking school in itself, to pick up the supplies you need for making nutritious and delicious meals at home, or head to the malls--the indoor Manhattan Mall and outdoor South Street Seaport--for shopping at chain merchandisers.

Go to the Park

In the middle of its busy metropolitan streets, Williamsburg is home to the 35-acre McCarren Park offering a variety of facilities, including basketball, tennis and handball courts, running tracks, baseball and soccer fields, and dog runs.

Visit Williamsburg's Galleries by Foot

Spend the day walking around Williamsburg and taking in its art scene at its many fine galleries. After rising prices forced SoHo's artists out of the neighborhood, many established themselves in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, which now contains nearly two dozen stimulating galleries from established as well as up-and-coming artists. You can find a gallery map on wagmag.org.

Go Out to Eat

If you're looking for some fine yet nutritious cuisine, Williamsburg is the area for you. Grab breakfast, lunch or dinner, a third of a mile away at Egg, which features fresh-from-the-farm dishes. Eat lunch at Bliss, less than half-mile away from the Williamsburg Music Hall and voted the top Brooklyn vegetarian restaurant on NYMag.com, or stop by St. Xavier's, a little more than a mile away, for fresh juices, smoothies and vegan goods.
