The state of Minnesota is nicknamed the "Land of 10,000 Lakes," a reflection of its bodies of water and outdoor beauty. Minnesota's vast natural areas provide numerous opportunities for camping. The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources has over 3,000 campsites available for campers. There are campsites for tents and RV, cabins and tipis for rent, equestrian campsite and remote campsites only accessible by boat or non-motorized transportation.
Tent and RV Camping
Minnesota has over 3,000 campsite locations in the state park system. Campsite amenities vary by location. Campsites can accommodate RVs or tents. Up to six people and one RV or tent are allowed per campsite. Most campsites have access to bathroom facilities in the park and running water during peak camping season, which is from late spring to mid-fall. Some campsites come with an optional electricity hookup. Sites have fire pits, but you must purchase firewood from the park office to prevent the spread of pests that might be harbored in other firewood.
Cabin Camping
Minnesota state parks also offer the option of renting cabins. Amenities and accessibility of cabins vary greatly by park and style of cabin. Camper cabins are simple 12-by-16-foot rustic cabins. Most have electricity but no running water. They are located near bathroom and water facilities. They contain a table, chairs and bunk beds.
Other styles of cabins are available, depending on the park. These cabins can hold groups of varying sizes, up to 25 people. Some are not handicapped accessible. They vary regarding furnishings and availability of running water, heat or air conditioning. Off-season availability varies. Contact the park for more information.
Remote Camping
If you like camping far away from the RV crowd, remote camping is an option. Remote camps are inaccessible by car or RV. These campsites are set far away in order to provide the most rustic camping experience. Getting to the campsite requires hiking, biking or kayaking. Like regular campsites, there is a limit of six people and one tent per site. Running water and primitive bathrooms are available nearby.
Equestrian Camping
If you like to ride your horse and camp like a cowboy, Minnesota offers over 1,000 miles of horse trails through its state parks. Thirteen state parks offer campsites for horseback riders to stay and put up their horse for a night. You must carry the state horse trail pass at all times on the trails and in the camps. The camps have access to bathroom facilities and some have optional electrical hookups.
Tipis
Tipi camping is available for up to six people. Tipis are available from late May to late October. No fires can be made inside the tipis. Outside fire pits are available.
Group Camp Sites
Large group campsites for family reunions or other large gatherings are available for up to 12 to 200 people. Limited campsites are available during the off season. Rates and sizes vary by campsite. Contact the specific state park office for details.
