Vitamins are an essential part of our biochemistry and a well-balanced diet. They work on all parts of the body, including the brain. Many herbs and vitamins are said to increase concentration and memory function. These statements are based on experience or case studies. There are very few clinical studies which show benefit for vitamins and herbs in memory or concentration.

Omega-3 Fatty Acids

Omega-3 fatty acids are found naturally in the brain. They are present in fish and nuts. A recent study by Dr. Fernando Gomez-Pinilla has shown that omega-3 improves learning and concentration. Deficiency of this enzyme leads to an increased risk of dementia and depression. Children with higher amounts of omega-3 excelled academically when compared to those who were deficient. The current theory is that omega-3 works on the synapses of neurons to speed up conduction.

Ginkgo Biloba

Ginkgo biloba is an herb made from extracts of the ginkgo leaf. It is a common herb used to treat memory dysfunction as well as depression. In the 2009 Journal of the American Medical Association, a large-scale study was performed on ginkgo biloba's effects on dementia. The study has shown no clear difference in cognitive function when comparing ginkgo biloba to placebo. As of this point, there is no definitive evidence to suggest that ginkgo is useful for concentration.

Magnesium

A January 2010 study in Neuron has shown promise for magnesium in memory retention and concentration. In this study, a new magnesium compound was given to laboratory rats. The rats given the compound outperformed the control group on, "learning abilities, working memory, short-term and long-term memory." The study also has shown that a higher level of brain magnesium is associated with quicker brain responses in rats. To date, there are no formal studies which show this benefit in humans.

Vitamin B12

Vitamin B12 is an important vitamin for nerves and red blood cells. It is naturally found in meat, fish, chicken and dairy products. Vitamin B12 deficiency has been shown to cause memory impairment. However, in the absence of a deficiency, Vitamin B12 supplements do not increase concentration or memory ability.

Folic Acid

Folic acid is a B-complex vitamin, which is necessary for healthy functioning of nerves. Those who are deficient in folic acid present with symptoms of difficulty with concentration. However, no studies have shown a benefit with folic acid supplementation. A 2008 review article highlighted that in the eight controlled-studies which have been performed, folic acid did not increase memory compared to placebo.
