Camping in Fall Creek Falls, Tennessee

Fall Creek Falls is a Tennessee state park located on the Cumberland Plateau. It offers more than 20,000 acres of virgin wilderness, laced with cascades, gorges, waterfalls, streams and hardwood forests. White Fall Creek Falls, which is located in the park's boundaries, is a 256-foot waterfall that is the highest in the eastern United States. Nature lovers flock to Fall Creek Falls to enjoy hiking, boating, fishing and swimming.

RV Camping

Many people spend the summer touring American's parks in their RVs. This can be a great and inexpensive way to spend the summer relaxing in the great outdoors. Fall Creek Falls offers full amenities for RV campers. There are 50 RV campsites at the main campground at Fall Creek Falls. RV sites have sewer connections, electricity and water. Sites can accommodate RVs up to 45 feet in length.

Tent Camping

There are three camping areas that offer tent camping. Drive-in sites are available at the main campground and offer tables, grills, water, electricity and bathrooms with showers. There are also walk-in sites available that offer tent pads, grills and bathrooms as well. Sites are less than a mile from the parking area. Three primitive backcountry campgrounds are also available on the two overnight trails. These do not have amenities. Permits are required to camp at the backcountry campsites.

Mountain Biking

Over 15 miles of moderately difficult mountain biking trails are available at Fall Creek Falls State Park. Mountain bikes are only allowed on specified trails and not on hiking trails. The Chinquapin Ridge Trail and Piney Creek Trails are moderately challenging and not suitable for beginners. The trails are open year-round except when closed for hunting in October. Mountain bike trails will be in various conditions as these trails are not maintained by the park service.

Hiking

Hiking is the best way to experience Fall Creek Falls as the park has over 34 miles of hiking trails. There are two long- distance, over-night trails for backpackers. There are also several short recreational trails suitable for all hikers. The Fall Creek Falls Overlook Trail is also accessible to persons with disabilities. The Cumberland Plateau offers hikes to altitudes that give sweeping views of the park. Check with the park headquarters for trail maps and information on current trail conditions.

Boating and Fishing

Fall Creek Falls Lake is open to boaters and fishermen year-round. Be advised that no motorized or private boats are allowed on the lake. However, paddle-boats, canoes and kayaks are welcome and can be rented from the park from April through October. Pontoon boat rides can be arranged through the park's Nature Center as well. To fish at Fall Creek Falls Lake, a valid fishing license is required and can be acquired through the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency website listed in the Resources section.
