The Dragger
This is perhaps the most important piece of equipment when maintaining a softball field. A dragger is a metal grate about 6 feet long by 6 feet wide. It has a handle that allows the user to pull it in continuous circles, which helps to smooth out a dirt infield after a full game and leave it in playable condition.
The Rake
In order to fine tune the field, you need to rake the areas around home plate, first base, second base and third base along with the pitcher's mound. The bases will see plenty of action during the game and home plate is obviously the center of activity. A rake is used to smooth out the ground and leave this area in playable condition. If the area around home or the pitcher's mound has been dug out by the hitters or the pitchers, you will need to refill this area with dirt and clay.
Water Hoses
Fields must be watered every day when they are being used. In addition to helping the athletes play on a smooth surface, it keeps dust and dirt from blowing in players' and spectators' faces. Fields that are used regularly but are not watered will provide an uneven and dusty surface and will be uncomfortable for those watching and playing.
