How to Calculate BMI Manually

There are several different assessments taken when it comes to the body. These assessments are utilized in the medical and fitness industry as screening tools for the prevention of future issues related to your health. Some of these parameters include body fat percentage, lean muscle mass, scale weight and BMI, or body mass index. Body mass index is a relationship of your height and weight in regards to how much fat you have on your body. This number can be figured out by way of a computer or it can be done manually.

Step 1

Weigh yourself. Step on the scale first thing in the morning on an empty stomach right after using the bathroom. To make it even more precise, do not wear any clothes.

Step 2

Measure your height. Stand with your back to a wall or stand on the inside of an open doorway. Place a small tick mark at the top of your head and measure yourself. Now take your height in inches and square it. For example, a 5-foot, 3-inch woman is 63 inches tall; 63 multiplied by 63 equals 3,969.

Step 3

Input information into an equation. Divide your weight by your height and multiply by 703 to get your body mass index (BMI). Here's an example using a women who is 5-foot-3 and 120 pounds: 703 x (120/63x63) = a BMI of 21.25.

Step 4

Compare your results. To assess where you stand, there is a chart that has various ranges. If you are <18.5 you are considered underweight, 18.5 to 24.9 is considered normal, 25 to 29.9 is overweight and 30 or above is considered obese.
