Colic is characterized by chronic, and sometimes unexplained, fussiness and crying. According to Keep Kids Healthy, colic affects 10 to 25 percent of newborns and begins at approximately two to three weeks of age. The characteristic screaming and crying lasts for two to three hours at a time. If the crying begins 30 to 60 minutes after feeding, then a formula sensitivity may be to blame. It is important for parents to consult a pediatrician before switching infant formulas.

Gerber Good Start

According to AskDrSears.com, Gerber Good Start Formula, formerly sold as Carnation Good Start, is a good choice if parents suspect that digestive problems are to blame for colic. It is less expensive than many soy and hypoallergenic alternatives. Good Start is a traditional milk-based formula with whey proteins that have been broken down to ease in digestion.

Lactose-Free Formulas

Lactose free formulas are recommended if a true milk allergy is to blame for fussiness. An infant who is lactose intolerant cannot digest lactose, which is the carbohydrate component in any dairy product. Lactose-free formula choices include SIMILAC Lactose-Free, Baby Only Organic Lactose-Free and Enfamil LoctoFree Lipil.

Soy Formulas

Soy formulas are also lactose free, so they may ease colic in infants with a lactose sensitivity or intolerance. AskDrSears notes that the protein component in soy based formulas is derived exclusively from soy protein, and infants with colic caused by an allergy to the protein in cow's milk have a reduced risk of reaction to the protein in soy milk. Soy based formula choices include Enfamil ProSobee, Similac Isomil and Good Start Soy.

Hypoallergenic Formulas

Hypoallergenic formulas are milk-based formulas in which the lactose has been broken down. These formulas also contain hydrolyzed proteins which have been predigested to aid in absorption. The AskDrSears formula guide notes that these formulas are more expensive, and parents often complain about the smell and taste, but they are a viable option when colic is due to digestive problems. Hypoallergenic formulas include Enfamil Nutramigen, Alimentum and Pregestamil.
