Determining whether a relative requires an assisted living or independent living facility can be difficult. Caregiver.org recommends talking to a social worker or physician, as well as getting family members together to discuss what is the best environment for an elderly parent based on his needs and health.
Making the Decision
When considering which type of facility is best for an elderly parent, it's important to determine how much assistance she needs, if any physical limitations are involved, how good her communication skills are and what size facility would be best.
Independent Living
Senior citizens who can take care of themselves and their residence and are able to live independently without medical care are considered good candidates for independent living. They are able to dress, drive, cook, clean, do their own laundry and take medication without assistance.
Types
The types of independent living housing for senior citizens include retirement communities, buildings for those over age 55 or some form of low-income housing. The independent living housing may have group dining and recreation areas. Apartments are usually fully equipped with kitchens and have laundry facilities.
Assisted Living
Assisted living facilities provide services for elderly people who need assistance with daily activities, according to HelpGuide.org. Assisted living facilities provide more care than independent living, yet allow senior citizens some level of independence until their health requires the move to a nursing home, where a high amount of medical care is needed.
Services
Assisted living facilities help with activities such as getting dressed, bathing, laundry, eating, and assistance with walking and getting in and out of bed. Many have social activities residents can attend, outings to community events, and exercise classes. Some individuals may require transportation to doctors' appointments and administration of medication, which is also provided by the staff at an assisted living facility.
Continuing Care Facilities
Continuing care facilities are also available, which offer different levels of living and care. These start with independent living and provide services through skilled nursing care.
