Fun Things to Do in Boston in the Summer

If Boston is in your summer vacation plans, there are several activities that you can do to get a little exercise, learn more about the city's history and culture or find food options from local farmers. Summer weather in Boston averages 72 degrees, and eastern sea breezes can provide a nice break from the heat, according to the city´s website.

Inline Skating

The Inline Club of Boston offers free Sunday Beginner Social Skates that depart from John F. Kennedy park, located near the Harvard Kennedy School. Skate tours travel along the Charles River path and Cambridge area, according to the ICB website. The tour is designed for beginners, but participants should have the necessary skills to complete the hour long skate, such as stopping on flat ground or on a slight incline.

Swimming Pools

The Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation provides free pool access during the summer, including pools in eight Boston area neighborhoods. Some locations are designed for kids play, such as the Frog Pond Spray Pool and Fountain at the Boston Common. Other pools, such as the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Swimming Pool in Chelsea, provide opportunities for lap swimming. Swimmers can find contact information for Boston area pools, which open in late June, on the department's website.

Boston Movie Mile

Fans of the movie ¨Good Will Hunting¨, or television shows ¨Cheers¨, ¨Alley McBeal¨ or ¨Boston Legal¨, can combine exercise with entertainment by taking a walking tour of Beacon Hill from Boston Movie Tours. Get a first-hand look at 30 movie spots, along with insider gossip and behind-the-scenes details from a tour guide. The tour lasts roughly an hour and a half.

Urban Adventure

Boston's Urban Interactive City Adventures, gives visitors a chance to combine adventure with culture. Participants are divided in groups, given iPhones and sent to explore different parts of the city looking for clues to solve a puzzle. Along the way, participants will meet actors planted by the company who will entertain, teach or guide, according to the company's website.

SoWa Open Market

The SoWa Open Market, located at 460 Harrison Ave., offers healthful food offerings from area farmers, according to sowaopenmarket.com. The market is open on Sundays from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m., and admission and parking are free, according to the website.
