Boston is one of the great iconic cities of America. In addition to housing some of American's most important historical monuments, it is a mecca for outdoor enthusiasts all year. This gracious city is located near several forests and miles of coastline, making it excellent for hiking, biking, boating and swimming in the summer. With many beautiful parks, museums and golf courses within the city limits, visitors to Boston will never find a shortage of things to do.

Parks

Spring and summer are excellent times to enjoy the many parks that dot the Boston area. The largest is Boston Common, which has the distinction of being the oldest park in the country. This 50-acre park is full of fun things to do. Frog Park in Boston Commons is a spray pool for kids in the summer, and it's transformed into an ice skating rink for all ages in the winter. Various events are always occurring in the park, including speeches, performances and sporting events. Two notable performance arts events are the Commonwealth Shakespeare Company's "Shakespeare on the Common" and the Boston Lyric Opera's "Outdoor Opera Series."

Golf

There are several golf courses located in the Boston area. George Wright Golf Course was designed by Donald Ross; it's located in Boston's Hyde Park neighborhood. The William J. Devine course lies in Franklin Park. The Devine course is America's second oldest public golf course. Other courses include the Mount Hood Golf Course, the Bellevue Golf Club and the Winchester Country Club.

Boating

Boating and sailing programs are available in Boston Harbor. Sail boats, yachts and sunset cruise ships are all available to meet all of your sporting and boating needs. Thrill boats will zip you over the ocean at close to 40 miles per hour. Whale watching and dolphin tours are available during migrating season, from April until the end of November.

Beaches

The Massachusetts coastline is lined with beautiful sandy beaches that are especially popular during the summer months; they're within an hour's drive from Boston. There are plenty of restaurants and hotels lining the coastline to accommodate travelers here. Besides lounging in the sun, visitors to these beaches can enjoy surfing, boating and sailing.

Historic Tours

No trip to Boston is complete without a tour of its most historic monuments. Boston is one of the oldest cities in America, and it's known as the Cradle of Liberty. You can take an Old Town Trolley Tour of Boston and learn about the American Revolution and other important historical events that have taken place in Boston.
