A batting helmet is an important and required piece of baseball equipment. Batting helmets are designed with a hard plastic outside and padding on the inside to protect the batter's head from errant pitches and also to protect runners from thrown and batted balls. Most helmets now come with ear-flaps that protect the ear area. Some helmets also come with coated metal face guards that protect the batter and runners from having a ball hit under the helmet into their face. Most leagues do not require that helmets have a face plate, but is is an excellent safety option.
Rawlings S100 Helmet
The Rawlings S100 is designed to protect the batter's head from a 100-mile-per-hour fastball. This helmet, the most protective helmet produced, is designed for major league players. Most other helmets can protect the head up to a 70-mile-per-hour pitch. The S100 has an expanded layer of polypropylene as well as a composite insert strip built into the frame that helps the helmet retain its protective oval shape upon impact.
