Cool Things to Do in Seattle

The city of Seattle, Wash. is filled with a range of activities that will get you outdoors in the fresh air from sunrise to sunset. Among Seattle's many activities are kayaking and walking, which allows you to enjoy the natural wonders of this waterfront city. In addition to spending time out in nature, Seattle is also home to one of the oldest farmers markets in the country.

Farmers Market

Pike Place Market, which overlooks Elliott Bay, is one of the oldest public farmers markets in the country. Here you will find merchants, local farmers and craftspeople selling a variety of items, ranging from fresh produce to antiques. The farmers market is open daily, year round. Food for sale includes fresh fruit and vegetables, baked goods, fish, honey, meat and poultry and wine. In addition to the produce market, Pike Place also features restaurants, shops and art galleries.

Parks

Head to the 534-acre Discovery Park for a cool day filled with views of Puget Sound, the Cascade Mountains and the Olympic Mountains. This park, which is the largest park in Seattle, includes forest groves, sand dunes, open meadows and streams. With nearly 12 miles of trails, this park is ideal for spending a day walking through a diverse wildlife sanctuary. More specifically, you can visit the tidal pools that are home to fish, mussels and crabs during low tide or head out on the educational 2.8-mile Nature Loop trail.

Kayaking

A unique way to see the Seattle sites is by kayak. Head out on your own or with a guided tour to explore the history and nature of the Puget Sound. There are many tour company's available, such as Alki Kayak Tours, which offers lighthouse sea tours, river sea tours, open sea tours, sunset tours and overnight kayak tours. In addition, Alki also offers lessons for beginner kayakers to make individuals more comfortable with a kayak prior to setting out on an adventure.

Walking, Jogging and Biking Paths

Head out for a walk, jog or bike along the path that stretches between Seward and Madrona parks. This path follows the shoreline and features views of the cityscape. At Seward Park, you will find a park that features an old growth forest that runs along the Bailey Peninsula, a walking path and miles of hiking trails. In Madrona Park, you will discover a waterfront park with a swimming area, grassy beach, jogging path and a dance studio.

Biking Trails

According to the city's website, Seattle has been rated as one of the top spots in the country for bicycling. The city features urban trails, bike lanes and signed bike routes to promote safe biking. In Seattle, you will find 45 miles of shared use pathways, 120-miles of street-bike lanes and 120 miles of signed-bike routes. The Seattle Bicycle Club has weekly bike rides for beginner and intermediate riders that winds around the city. Head to Aaron's Bicycle Rental's for a place to rent a bike if you are unable to bring one along with you to Seattle.
