Anadrol, a brand name for the drug oxymetholone, is an oral anabolic steroid. Anadrol has been approved by the Food and Drug Administration for treating anemia and osteoporosis in humans. Patients have reported a wide range of side effects while using Anadrol, some of which can be severe.
Peliousis Hepatis
Long-term use of Anadrol can result in peliousis hepatis. Peliosis hepatis is a condition in which blood-filled cysts develop randomly throughout the liver. This condition could lead to more serious and life-threatening health complications, such as liver failure.
Liver Tumors
Anadrol has been associated with tumors on or inside the liver. These liver growths can appear as benign or cancerous. Liver tumors are not life-threatening unless they become cancerous, or cause liver failure.
Altered Lipoprotein Levels
Users of Anadrol have reported negative changes in lipoprotein levels. Lipoproteins carry and transport cholesterol in the blood. According to the National Institute of Drug Abuse, long-term use of Anadrol can increase the levels of low-density lipoproteins, LDL, and decrease the levels of high-density lipoproteins, HDL. High levels of LDL and low levels of HDL increase the risk of atherosclerosis and coronary heart disease.
Enlarged Heart
Anadol has been associated with heart enlargement, due to left ventricle hypertrophy. Left ventricle hypertrophy is the thickening of heart muscles in the left ventricle, which is the main pump of the heart. While heart enlargement is not a disease, it is a predictor of more serious diseases involving the heart.
Allergic Reactions
Allergic reactions can also occur with Anadrol. Common allergic reactions include skin rash, hives, swelling of mouth and face, and difficulty breathing. Loss of consciousness is also possible, but not very common.
Enlarged Prostate
Anadrol can cause enlarged prostrates in men. The prostate is a reproductive male gland that surrounds the urethra. As the prostate gland grows, it presses against the urethra, causing problems with urination and the bladder. Prostate enlargement increases the risk of developing prostate cancer.
