Mizani has a full line of personal care and hair care products that was developed by Soft Sheen and Redken in 1991. Today, Mizani is part of the L'oreal line. Using its Botanifying Conditioning Shampoo with Botanicals as an example, other than water and fragrance, it has 18 ingredients.
Surfactants
Surfactants are those agents that are included in a product to provide a smooth surface for the shampoo to glide on so that it has full coverage. There are five surfactants in Mizani Botanifying shampoo; cocamidepropyl betaine, sodium laureth sulfate, cocamide, MEA, polysorbate 20 and PPG-5-ceteth-10 phosphate. Cocamide mea and PPG-5-ceteth-10 phosphate both also perform as emulsifiers, according to Skin Deep. Sodium laureth sulfate also can be a cleanser and help in cleaning the hair shaft, states Cosmetics Cop. Polysorbate 20 can help agents dissolve in a solvent and Cocamidepropyl betaine is a more gentle surfactant, according to Cosmetics Cop.
Preservatives
Preservatives help to inhibit bacteria, mold and fungi growth to keep a product from spoiling. There are three preservatives in this shampoo; propylparaben, methylparaben and DMDM hydantoin. The parabens are gentler, as they do not release formaldehyde but DMDM hydantoin is a formaldehyde releasing preservative, according to Cosmetics Cop.
Antistatic Agents
Antistatic agents help to keep static electricity out. There are three antistatic agents in this shampoo and they are all also a film-forming agent; polyquaternium-7, hydrolyzed wheat protein and polyquaternium-10, according to Skin Deep.
Fragrances
Fragrances give a product its pleasing smell and may provide a peg on which to market the product. Other than a generic "fragrance" listing, there are three agents included that are also perfuming agents. These are hexyl cinnamal, geraniol and limonene, according to Skin Deep.
Emollient
Emollients help to moisturize and keep skin and hair soft. Glycol stearate is the emollient in this shampoo, according to Cosmetics Info.
Hydration
Hydrators keep water locked into the hair or skin. Aloe barbadensis is one of two hydrators in this shampoo. It also is a botanical ingredient that keeps flakes down, according to Cosmetics Info. Panthenol, or vitamin B-5, is another hydrator.
Stabilizer
Disodium EDTA is the stabilizer in this shampoo; working to keep the ingredients from binding with minerals, according to Cosmetics Cop. This keeps the fragrance, texture and consistency from changing.
