Hepatitis C is a liver infection caused by a virus. It is contracted by contact with the blood of an infected person. Some cases of hepatitis C resolve without treatment, while other cases become chronic, defined as lasting more than six months. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that over 3 million Americans have chronic hepatitis C. Symptoms often appear as the liver becomes damaged.
Nausea
Nausea often manifests in patients with long-term hepatitis C. This may be accompanied by an upset stomach, vomiting or diarrhea. The stool may be clay-colored. The National Digestive Diseases Information Clearinghouse explains that some patients suffer a loss of appetite. This can lead to weight loss and mild nutritional deficiencies.
Fatigue
Like many infections, chronic hepatitis C can cause intermittent fatigue. This excessive tiredness is debilitating for some, making it difficult to work full-time or manage labor-intensive responsibilities.
Swelling
Swelling may become apparent as the virus damages the liver. Peripheral edema may occur, which is the swelling of the ankles and feet. The legs and hands may swell in some cases. Ascites, a different kind of swelling, may cause swelling in the abdominal area. This uncomfortable swelling can cause the patient's clothing to feel tight as the girth expands.
Yellowing of Skin
Another symptom of long-term hepatitis C is jaundice. This causes the patient's skin to have a yellowish hue. The whites of the eyes also become yellow, explains the American Academy of Family Physicians.
Fever
Patients suffering from chronic Hepatitis C may suffer from a low-grade fever. This fever may range from 98.6 to 102 degrees F. It may respond to an over-the-counter fever reducing medicine, only to return several hours later.
Bleeding Problems
As the liver's condition worsens, the patient may notice that bleeding episodes take a longer period of time to resolve. A shaving-related cut may bleed for 30 minutes instead of stopping in one or two minutes, for example. The individual may also notice that he bruises may easily than normal. Bruises may be larger that usual for the type of injury.
Dark Yellow Urine
Dark yellow urine is another indication of long-term Hepatitis C. This often accompanies clay-colored stools and jaundice. While a late symptom of infection, it is sometimes the first symptom that causes an individual to go to a physician for diagnosis.
