Pulsatilla, or Pulsatilla nigricans, is a homeopathic remedy that is made from the the pasqueflower, or windflower. In homeopathic medicine, pulsatilla is a female remedy best suited for blonde, blue-eyed women with a shy, mild and tearful disposition. According to homeopath Keith Souter, pulsatilla can help relieve painful menstruation, PMS and menopausal hot flashes. This remedy also has a number of beneficial uses during pregnancy, although there is insufficient evidence to back up these claims. Consult with your naturopath or certified homeopath prior to taking pulsatilla during pregnancy.
Morning Sickness
Pulsatilla may improve the symptoms of morning sickness according to the Society of Homeopaths. You can take pulsatilla when your morning sickness is characterized by nausea with little vomiting and is worse after eating and drinking. Your morning sickness may improve with fresh air and you may also feel weepy, moody, and feel better after being comforted. Follow your homeopath's direction on dosage guidelines.
Varicose Veins
Accourding to Dr. Souter, pulsatilla can help reduce or treat varicose veins during pregnancy when they are the result of congestion. Pulsatilla can treat varicose veins that feel sore, burn and improve after cold application. Follow your homeopath's dosage guidelines. If your varicose veins are severe, worsen or persist, contact your healthcare provider immediately.
Breech Position
Multiple, small doses of pulsatilla can stimulate the uterine muscles to help turn your breech baby according to Hpathy.com. Pulsatilla for breech is indicated if you are weepy, cry openly, crave fresh air and desire sympathy. Turning a breech baby has inherent risks, therefore consult with your healthcare provider prior to using pulsatilla. Follow your homeopath's dosage directions closely when taking pulsatilla during pregnancy.
Labor
Pulsatilla may help stimulate contractions during early labor or resume a stalled or inefficient labor. Pulsatilla is indicated during early labor when it is hesitant or slow and your contractions are irregular. This remedy may also help dilate a slow, inefficient cervix. Pulsatilla may help if you feel clingy, miserable and tearful during labor. Consult with your healthcare provider prior to taking pulsatilla during labor and follow the dosage guidelines.
Postpartum Blues
Pulsatilla may prevent or treat postpartum blues that can lead to depression. Pulsatilla can help if you are moody and like sympathy, especially around the time when your breast milk comes in. This remedy can be beneficial when you do not like a stuffy room, have no thirst, and feel better with fresh air. Postpartum depression can become extreme and require treatment beyond homeopathic medicine. Consult with your healthcare provider prior to taking pulsatilla for postpartum blues and follow your homeopath's specific dosage guidelines.
