Benefits of Elliptical Machines

If you were to enter the cardio room of any fitness center, you will notice the elliptical trainers are one of the most popular machines in the gym. In fact, the lines for the elliptical machines are often much longer than the lines for the treadmills. In 2002, "American Fitness Magazine" cited a study performed by Thomas Altena, an exercise physiologist at the University of Missouri-Columbia. The researchers wanted to compare the physiological benefits of the elliptical machine vs. the treadmill. They found that the benefits were almost identical. However, the elliptical machine had a few characteristics that made it more appealing to many exercisers.

Perceived Exertion

Many people who use elliptical machines find it easier to extend the duration of their workouts. However, this is not because the elliptical is a low-intensity workout. As mentioned, the aerobic benefits are almost identical to those of a treadmill. However, due to the natural, fluid movements of the elliptical machine, most participants experience a lower perceived exertion.

Weight Bearing with Less Impact

By now, most people have heard that weight-bearing activity can help prevent osteoporosis. However, many weight bearing-activities are high impact, which means that they put an enormous strain on the joints. Since your feet never leave the pedals of an elliptical machine, there is less impact to the joints.

Muscle Toning as Well as Aerobic Benefits

Many elliptical machines have special handles that allow you to work the upper boy along with the lower body. Additionally, some have a function that allows you to increase the incline, thereby providing an excellent workout for the gluteal muscles and hamstrings.

Burning Calories

In general, the amount of calories burned in any workout depends on your weight, gender and exercise intensity. Keeping this in mind, the elliptical machine can burn anywhere between 30 and 500 calories during a 30-minute workout.

Strengthens the Heart

Since the elliptical machine provides aerobic exercise, it can lower blood pressure and help prevent heart disease.
