Scalp itching is a symptom of several skin problems of the head. This can include dryness, excess skin cell growth, skin conditions like psoriasis, overuse of products, poor hygiene or head lice. There are methods of treating scalp itch, but some underlying causes will require more specific treatment, such as lice-removing medications or anti-inflammatory medications for psoriasis. When scalp itch treatments don't work, seek medical advice to properly identify the cause and create an effective treatment plan.
Step 1
Brush the scalp with a soft bristled brush or fine toothed comb several times a day and before a bath or shower. This can both loosen excess buildup from hair care products or skin cells as well as stimulate blood flow to the scalp.
Step 2
Pour a generous amount of olive oil into the hands and massage it into the scalp right before bed.
Step 3
Cover the scalp with a shower cap and go to bed.
Step 4
Remove the shower cap in the morning and wash the hair with warm water and a mild shampoo. A dandruff shampoo should be used when excess flaking accompanies the itching. Rinse the hair thoroughly and repeat the shampooing if there still seems to be olive oil in the hair.
Step 5
Apply a thick hair conditioner. Allow it to set for five to 10 minutes before rinsing thoroughly.
Step 6
Dry the hair with a towel or with a blow dryer set to the lowest warm setting.
Tips and Warnings
- Avoid scratching the scalp, as this can exacerbate symptoms. DermNetNZ.org recommends using a shampoo made with ketoconazole for itchy, red scalp. This product can reduce the symptoms of eczema, psoriasis and fungal infections.
- If you suspect you have lice, purchase an over-the-counter lice remedy solution. Contact a medical professional if the scalp bleeds, has a foul odor or symptoms are overly bothersome. This can be a sign of a more serious ailment that requires treatment.
