Stress
According to the American Medical Association, low libido is second only to impotence when it comes to sexual dysfunction in men. Libido is another way of saying "sex drive" which naturally decreases with age. But there are other factors that can cause low libido. One of them is stress. This can especially be seen in men who work long hours and have a lot of stress from home life. When this is joined by anxiety and depression, it can be even worse.
Disease
When a man suffers from a disease, he may stop thinking about sex. This can be seen with short-term illnesses and especially long-term conditions like cancer. In addition to illnesses, a low libido can also be the result of the thyroid gland not properly producing male hormones or the pituitary gland not working optimally as a result of a tumor forming.
Interactions
Prescription drugs often come with harmful side effects, including a loss of libido. Some drugs in particular that can cause this include blood pressure pills, antidepressants and tranquilizers. Illegal drugs such as marijuana, heroin and cocaine can also cause low libido.
Low Testosterone
Testosterone is a male sex hormone that is also responsible for muscle mass, muscle strength, bone health and mood regulation. In some cases, testosterone production becomes low and a man can suffer effects such as fatigue, sleep disturbances, an increase in body fat, a loss of libido and also impotence.
