Herbs for a Hormone Imbalance in Men

Levels of the hormone testosterone gradually begin to decline in men after age 30, according to the Cleveland Clinic. Since testosterone is responsible for sexual and reproductive function, inadequate levels may affects a man's sex drive and contribute to infertility problems. Some men may even suffer from hot flashes, depression and irritability, says the National Institutes of Health. A number of herbs are purported to help balance male hormones. Consult with your doctor before taking herbal supplements. Herbs are not regulated by the Food and Drug Administration.

Saw Palmetto

Saw palmetto is used to treat hormonal imbalances, according to the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine. This herb is sometimes used by men to treat erectile dysfunction and a low sex drive. Saw palmetto is also purported to increase sperm production.
Side effects associated with saw palmetto include upset stomach, diarrhea, constipation and vomiting, warns the Mayo Clinic. Consult with your health care provider before taking saw palmetto to help balance hormones.

Yohimbe

The African herb yohimbe may help men with erectile dysfunction caused by low testosterone levels, according to MotherNature.com. A number of side effects are associated with this herb, including dizziness, anxiety, insomnia and nausea.
When taken in large doses, yohimbe may speed the heart rate, raise blood pressure and possibly cause kidney failure. Check with your health practitioner before taking Yohimbe.

Chasteberry

Chasteberry, or chaste tree, aids in the natural production of hormones, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center. It can take one year or longer to realize the effects of this herb. No serious adverse reactions have been linked to chasteberry but it may cause dizziness, acne-type rashes and stomach upset. Consult with your doctor before taking chasteberry supplements.

Ginkgo

Ginkgo, also known as ginkgo biloba, has been proposed as an herbal remedy to improve sexual function in men. Ginkho may expand blood flow to the penis. Further research is needed determine the actual effectiveness of this herb in the treatment of hormonal imbalances in men, according to the National Institutes of Health.
Ginkgo may intensify the effects of blood-thinning medications. Consult with your doctor before taking ginkgo supplements.

Epimedium

Epimedium, also known as horny goat weed, may help boost testosterone levels, according to the Mayo Clinic. This herb is purported to stimulate sperm production and increase sex drive.
Talk to your doctor before taking epimedium. It has been known to cause breathing problems when taken in high doses.
