A Diet for Itchy Skin

Itchy skin can be a major source of irritation. Although there are many factors that induce an itchy response, a good deal of these factors can be caused by a poor diet. Regardless of the reason for itchiness, complications, such as skin infections and possible scars, could result. In most cases, scratching the affected area simply causes more irritation. Depending on the cause of the itchiness, a healthy skin diet plays a key role in managing the symptoms. In certain cases, a diet for itching skin would be helpful.

Causes

There are many causes for itchy skin, such as skin conditions, internal organ issues, and most commonly, dry skin. Each of these causes play a large factor as to what kind of treatment or diet a person may have to attempt to relieve the symptoms. Knowing which diet works well to combat certain causes will be helpful, but the reason for the itchiness must be known as well.

Diet for Dry Skin

The most common cause for itchiness is dry skin, according to the Mayo Clinic. This is also the cause of itchiness that is most easily combated with a diet for itching. To clear dry skin up and cure the itch, a diet rich in fatty acids, such as fish and tuna, would be beneficial. Supplementing plenty of citrus fruit like oranges and grapefruits will help as well, especially if an increase in vitamins A, B and C are introduced. The most important aspect of beating dry skin is to drink plenty of fluids so the body is kept well hydrated. Botanical Online feels this is a good diet for dry skin because of the moisturizing properties of the oils.

Diet for Skin Conditions

A second cause for itchy skin is a skin condition such as psoriasis or eczema, notes the Mayo Clinic. These conditions can be caused by many factors, but the effects can be lessened or even cured by using a healthy skin diet. To do this the diet should be organic in nature and use few processed foods. Fresh fruits and vegetables are important here, as well as using flax seed and fish oils. Dr. Nicole Sundene notes in her article for Kitchen Table Medicine, "Self Help for Eczema and Itchy Skin," that this will help protect the skin and make "a solid healthy barrier." Additionally, what not to eat is essential too and according to Women Fitness, red meats as well as certain dairy products like eggs can cause outbreaks of these conditions.

Diet for Internal Disease

Certain diseases may cause itchiness. These diseases include hepatic disease, iron deficiency anemia and renal disease. This group is the hardest to cure your itching by diet alone, but according to the University of Maryland Medical Center, eating grains like rice and rye as well as adding beans to your diet may help, depending on your condition. With these diseases you should avoid coffee, sugar and pre-packaged foods.

Considerations

Although a diet for itching may solve the problem for some individuals, it may not be enough for everyone. Before starting any diet you should consult a physician ensure that the diet will be right for you and does not interfere with any drugs you may be taking.
