Acne, whose symptoms include pimples, blackheads and whiteheads, is the most commonly encountered skin problem in teens and young adults, according to Harvard University's health services. Though there are many expensive acne-treating products on the market--Lancome's oil-controlling lotion rings in at almost $40 for just 1.7 oz., says skincare expert Paula Begoun--you don't need to break your bank account to get rid of blemishes. Effective acne-fighting cleansers, creams and other products can help to banish pimples for $20 or less.
ProActiv Revitalizing Toner
ProActiv is a well-recognized brand in the acne treatment industry. Its revitalizing toner's efficacy was tested by Begoun who said it was "very good." It can help to prevent breakouts with alpha hydroxy acid. Added at a concentration of 6 percent, the acids help o exfoliate your skin surface to minimize the clogging of pores that may provoke new blemishes. Begoun says it costs approximately $16 for 4 oz.
Neutrogena Wave
Neutrogena's Wave is a hand-held exfoliating gadget that helps to manually slough off dead skin cells. The editors of "Women's Health" magazine recommend the device as a "pre-emptive strike" against acne, noting that it only costs approximately $13 from a drugstore. The device uses a textured cleansing pad that's soaked in salicylic acid, a proven acne-fighter.
Neutrogena Oil-Free Acne Stress Control Power-Foam Wash
Neutrogena's acne-fighting cleanser can be had for just over $8 for 8 oz., reports Begoun. She ranked its efficacy as "very good," thanks in part to standard water-soluble cleansers that help lift away dirt, makeup and oil, plus salicylic acid added at a concentration of 0.5 percent. She notes that it does include fragrances, which may irritate very sensitive skin.
Murad Acne Spot Treatment
If you have a generally clear complexion but occasionally suffer from a blemish or two, Murad's spot treatment may help. Begoun says it costs less than $18 for a 0.5 oz. tube, of which you use very little each time. The cream is intended to be dabbed on individual pimples. Its active ingredient, sulfur added at a strength of 3 percent, helps to dry out the blemish and kill the bacteria that's causing the blemish.
