Women who are transitioning from a short haircut to a shoulder-length style know all too well that hair can take a long time to grow. Unfortunately, there are not verifiable supplements or techniques that guarantee faster hair growth. But you can encourage hair growth in several ways.

Normal Hair Growth

How fast a person's hair grows depends on genetics, although environmental factors also play a role, according to LongHair.org. On average, hair grows a half inch per month, but it sometimes grows faster in the summer. Hormonal changes, such as pregnancy, may also speed hair growth.

Exercise

Exercise is beneficial for overall physical health, but it may also improve the quality, texture and growth of the hair. Regular exercise increases blood flow throughout the body, including the scalp, which may help the hair reach its fullest growth potential. Important nutrients can reach and nourish the hair follicles, resulting in better length retention and hair health.

Nutrition

What we eat affects our body in profound ways. In order for hair to reach its fullest growth potential, it must be nourished from the inside out, according to WellnessTalk.org. Consuming a diet rich in hair-friendly nutrients, such as B vitamins, zinc, vitamin A and vitamin E, will not only revitalize dry, brittle hair, but may also prevent or reduce hair thinning. To accomplish improved growth, you don't need to make a drastic change in your diet. Regularly adding green, leafy vegetables to your diet should be enough to provide adequate nutrients. Vitamin A should not be taken in large quantities, and the use of supplemental vitamins should be discussed with your health-care provider.

Scalp Massage

According to LongHair.org, increasing circulation to the scalp through massage is another way to encourage hair growth. Begin at the base of the scalp and gently move the skin in small circular motions. Only the pads of the fingers should be used. For more ease, a light oil can be added to the scalp. Massage the scalp for five to 10 minutes. Avod applying too much pressure during the massage. You should not experience any discomfort.

Considerations

Although it is common to focus on hair growth, taking care of the ends of your hair is also important. Growing your hair accomplishes little if the ends are damaged, split or breaking. If you are not retaining length, focus on practicing healthy hair techniques, such as gentle combing and brushing, and always treat the hair like a fine silk.
